Big Walk does not have random online matchmaking. You need to arrange a group, let one person host a world, and join through a platform friend list or the host’s Join Code. A session supports 2–12 players, and Big Walk has no official single-player mode.
That answer comes directly from the official Big Walk FAQ. “Matchmaking” is often used to mean any way of joining a multiplayer game, but Big Walk separates friend joining from an automatic queue. Last checked: August 7, 2026.
How Big Walk matchmaking actually works
There is no button that searches for strangers and fills an open lobby. The host opens a saved world, waits until it has loaded, and then invites people they already know. Guests can use the platform friend list or enter the active Join Code.
The host owns the saved progress. When the group wants to continue that world later, the same host must open it again before friends connect. A Join Code helps people enter the session, but it does not transfer the save or create a permanent public server.
Big Walk supports cross-platform play, so friends do not all need the same hardware. The normal host, version, and Join Code requirements still apply. Crossplay is a connection feature, not a random matchmaking system.
How to create a session
Choose the person who will keep the group’s progress. That player starts a world and selects the setup intended for 2 players, 3 players, or 4+ players. The full supported session size is 2–12 people.
The host should wait until the world has finished loading before sending an invitation. This matters because the official troubleshooting steps say guests cannot connect until the host is inside. If the host sees a connection warning, fix or restart the host session before inviting the group.
Pick a host who is likely to return for later sessions and has a stable connection. Host performance and network quality may affect other players, according to the official FAQ. Choosing the host early also prevents confusion about who owns the saved world.
How to join a friend’s game
Try the platform friend list first when the host appears there. If the host is missing or the group is cross-platform, use the current Join Code from the active session details. The Mac App Store version does not provide a Game Center friend list, so the code route is especially relevant there.
Compare the first two version numbers shown at the bottom of each main menu. They must match before the players can connect. Finish any pending update and fully restart Big Walk if the numbers differ.
If a join attempt fails, restart the guest’s game and try the host’s current session again. If it still fails, the host should restart Big Walk, reload the world, and share the new active code or invitation. Do not keep using details from a session that the host has closed.
How to find people to play with
Because Big Walk has no random queue, player finding happens outside the game. Start with friends you already know or a community where you can control what personal information you share. The Big Walk subreddit is active, but it is an unofficial community rather than developer-operated matchmaking.
No official Big Walk Discord was confirmed through the official site, FAQ, Steam page, or SteamDB on the verification date. Do not trust a server merely because its name or logo looks official; look for a link from House House or Panic. Treat the subreddit as a community space rather than an official support desk.
Share only the temporary Join Code needed for the session. Never share a platform password, recovery code, payment information, or personal address to join a group. Block and report anyone who asks for account access.
Does Big Walk have public lobbies?
The official FAQ documents friend lists and Join Codes, not a public server browser or random lobby queue. A host session is available to the people the host invites. Do not assume an open slot will be filled automatically.
Community posts looking for teammates show that people want group-finding options. They do not prove that an in-game feature exists. The current official FAQ still says there is no online matchmaking.
For now, players join through friends plus a Join Code. Avoid relying on old videos whose interface may no longer match the current build.
Matchmaking, crossplay, and solo play
Crossplay is supported across Windows, macOS, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. This expands the group of friends who can join, but it does not add strangers automatically. Use a Join Code when platform friend systems do not line up.
Big Walk has no supported solo mode. The official FAQ says one person can start and walk around a little, but will not get very far; two players is the smallest setup for full cooperative progression. Hosting alone therefore allows limited exploration rather than a complete single-player campaign.
The three terms answer different questions: matchmaking is how players are paired, crossplay is which platforms can connect, and party size is how many people can share a session. Big Walk offers crossplay and 2–12 player sessions, but no random matchmaking or solo mode. Keeping those terms separate makes it easier to choose the right joining option.
Common matchmaking problems
If the host is not visible, confirm that the accounts are friends on the relevant platform or switch to a Join Code. If the code fails, wait until the host is inside the world and compare versions. Restart the guest first, then restart the host if needed.
If several guests fail to join the same host, check the host’s connection warning and network. If one guest fails while everyone else joins, focus on that player’s version, client restart, and internet connection. Change one condition at a time so the group knows what affected the result.
Do not delete the host’s save, disable security software, or buy a network service as a first step. Those actions are not part of the current official join checklist. Use the dedicated connection guide for the full verified order.
Big Walk matchmaking FAQ
Can Big Walk match me with random players?
No. The official FAQ says there is no random online matchmaking. Organize a group and join a host through a friend list or Join Code.
Can I join a lobby without knowing the host?
There is no official public lobby browser documented at launch. You need the host in your platform friend flow or their current Join Code. Community player-finding happens outside the game.
Can two people play Big Walk?
Yes. Two is the minimum supported group size, and the host can choose a 2-player world setup. The maximum session size is 12.
Can cross-platform friends join the same session?
Yes. Big Walk supports crossplay across its listed platforms. Make sure the first two game-version numbers match and use a Join Code when needed.
Who keeps the group’s progress?
The host keeps the saved world. The same host must start that world before friends can return to it. A Join Code does not move the save to another player.
