MultiplayerThe host can see the Big Walk Join Code in the corner of the host menu before entering the world. After the session starts, open the in-game menu and choose Session Details. Version 1.4.9 requires a session password when starting a game, so share both details privately and let guests connect only after the host is fully loaded into the world.
This answer follows the official Big Walk FAQ and the official Version History. Menu wording can change after an update, so use the labels shown in the current build. Last checked: August 31, 2026.
Version 1.5.1 changes the host-menu password wording and clears the password field after a failed join attempt. Re-enter the current password before retrying; an empty field after failure does not mean the host removed the password.
What a Big Walk Join Code does
A Join Code lets a player connect to a friend’s host session without relying only on the platform friend list. It is especially useful for cross-platform groups or when a friend does not appear in the expected list. Big Walk officially supports crossplay, so the code is part of the normal friend-joining flow rather than a workaround for unsupported platforms.
The code points to a host’s active session. It does not create a permanent public server, transfer save ownership, or provide random matchmaking. The host still owns the world progress and must start that saved world before anyone else can enter.
Treat a code as session information, not as a private invitation by itself. The official FAQ says anyone who knows the code can join the session, while the 1.4.9 Version History says a password is now required when starting one. Share the code and password only with the intended group.
Where the host finds the Join Code
Before starting, look in the corner of the host menu for the current Join Code. After entering the world, open the in-game menu and choose Session Details. These are the two locations described by the official FAQ.
Make sure the host opened the correct save before sending the code. Big Walk stores the group’s progress with the host, so choosing a different world may successfully connect everyone to the wrong progress. Confirm the expected location or session with the group first.
Do not send a code while the host is still at the main menu or loading. The official troubleshooting guidance says the host must be loaded into the world before other players connect. Waiting for the host prevents a normal loading state from looking like a broken code.
How a friend uses the code
The joining player should open Big Walk and choose the Join Code route from the multiplayer or session interface. Enter the code exactly as the host provides it, then wait for the connection attempt to finish. If the menu differs from an older image or video, follow the current in-game labels.
Before joining, compare the version information at the bottom of the main menu. The official FAQ says the first two version numbers must match. A correct code will not make incompatible game builds connect.
If the code fails once, fully restart the joining player’s game and try the host’s current code again. If it still fails, the host should restart Big Walk, reload the world, and share the new active-session details. This restart order follows the official connection checklist.
When to use a Join Code instead of the friend list
Use a Join Code when a friend does not appear in the platform friend list, after confirming that the accounts are added correctly. The official FAQ presents the code as the alternative joining route. It is also the practical route for friends who are playing across different supported platforms.
The Mac App Store build does not have a Game Center friend list, according to the FAQ. That does not remove online play; it makes the Join Code route important for those players. Avoid claiming that every Mac player has the same limitation, because the wording applies specifically to the Mac App Store friend-list integration.
Same-platform friends may find the normal friend list faster. If an invitation repeatedly points to an old host session, switch to the code from the current loaded world. Keep the test controlled rather than alternating between several expired invitations and codes.
Does the Join Code work with crossplay?
Big Walk supports cross-platform sessions across Windows, macOS, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. The official FAQ and Steam page both confirm crossplay. A Join Code therefore gives supported-platform friends a direct way to target the same host session.
Crossplay still requires compatible game versions. Check the first two in-game version numbers rather than assuming every platform received a hotfix at the same moment. If they differ and no update is available, wait for the platform releases to align.
Platform privacy or network conditions may also affect a connection, but the current official FAQ starts with host readiness, internet access, compatible versions, and full restarts. Do not jump to unofficial port numbers or paid network tools. Record the two platforms and exact error if the official sequence fails.
Why a Big Walk Join Code may not work
The first check is whether the host is fully inside the world. A code cannot solve a host session that has not started or a host connection warning. Ask the host to confirm that they can move normally before the guest tries again.
The second check is version compatibility. Compare the first two version numbers at the bottom of the main menu, install any available updates, and fully restart Big Walk. Never download unofficial files to force a version match.
The third check is session freshness. Restart the joining player first, then restart the host if necessary and use the newly active session information. Player reports show that codes and invitations can be part of failed-join symptoms, but one report does not prove a universal code bug.
Join Code passwords, privacy, and safe sharing
Send the current code directly to the people you want in the session. Avoid posting it publicly while the world is open: the official FAQ says anyone who knows the code can join. Starting with version 1.4.9, the official Version History says a session password is required when starting a game. The FAQ also says the host can change that password later through Session Details.
A password is useful when a code has been shared in a larger group or posted accidentally. Send the password separately and change it if access should be removed. Restarting the session may refresh its details, but it is not a substitute for using the documented password control.
A Join Code is not an official support credential. House House, Panic, or platform support should not need your account password to diagnose a connection problem. Never send login details, recovery codes, payment information, or private account data with a game-session code.
No official Big Walk Discord was confirmed through the official site, FAQ, Steam page, or SteamDB on the verification date. Do not paste the code into a server that claims to be official without confirming its link from an official property. The Big Walk subreddit is a community resource, not an official support desk.
Big Walk Join Code FAQ
Is a Big Walk game code the same as a Join Code?
Players sometimes use “game code” as shorthand, but Big Walk’s official name is Join Code. It is the short, unique code generated when the host starts a session. Use the code shown in the current host menu or under Session Details after the world has loaded.
Can I use a Join Code before the host enters the world?
No. The host must start and load the world before friends connect. Wait until the host is inside, then use the current code.
Is a Join Code permanent?
The official FAQ describes the code as part of the host session, not as a permanent server address. After a host restart, always use the code shown in the current session details.
Does a Big Walk session require a password?
In version 1.4.9, the official Version History says session passwords are required when starting a game. The host can change the password during play through Session Details, according to the official FAQ.
Can a Join Code transfer saved progress?
No. The host owns the world progress and must start that save. The code helps a friend enter the active session; it does not transfer host ownership.
Why does the code fail even though it is correct?
Check that the host is loaded, both players have internet access, and the first two version numbers match. Fully restart the guest, then restart the host if needed. Use the newly displayed code after the host restarts.
