If Big Walk voice chat is not working, open Settings > Audio and watch Microphone Activity while speaking. If the meter does not react, confirm that the microphone works in another app, is connected and not hardware-muted, and that Mute Mode is not set to hold. On PS5, open the PS button menu, choose Sound, and turn off Mute Game Voice Chat.
First identify whether your microphone sends no sound, other players are inaudible, or everyone is simply very quiet. These symptoms need different checks, and the unusually quiet proximity-voice problem was a developer-acknowledged launch issue. This page follows the official FAQ, official Steam news, independent reporting, and player reports; last checked August 7, 2026.
Identify the exact voice-chat problem
Big Walk uses proximity voice chat, so voices naturally change with distance and the surrounding space. The Steam page describes voices fading as friends move away and being affected by echoes or obstacles. Hearing someone at one location but not another may therefore be intended behavior rather than a broken microphone.
A true input problem looks different: the Microphone Activity indicator does not respond when you speak, or it responds but no nearby friend hears you. An output problem means other people can communicate with each other but you hear nothing. A quiet-voice problem means speech is present yet much softer than expected even at close range.
Test beside one friend in a quiet area before changing settings. Ask that friend to watch or listen while you speak, then swap roles. This simple test separates a one-player microphone issue from a session-wide volume issue and prevents the group from changing every setting at once.
Check Microphone Activity in Big Walk
Open Settings > Audio and speak at a normal level while watching Microphone Activity. The official FAQ uses this indicator as the first in-game check, because it shows whether Big Walk is receiving an input signal. If it moves, the game can see some microphone activity and the next checks should focus on mute behavior, distance, or output volume.
If it does not move, check the physical connection and any mute button on the headset, microphone, controller, or cable. Reconnect the device before starting Big Walk again, especially if the microphone was plugged in after launch. The official guidance also says to verify that the same microphone works in another application.
Use a normal operating-system voice recorder or communication app for that comparison. If the microphone fails there too, the problem is outside Big Walk and should be fixed at the device or system level first. If it works elsewhere but Microphone Activity remains flat, record the platform, device name, and current game version for an official support report.
Review Mute Mode and moderation status
The official FAQ specifically tells players to check whether Mute Mode is set to hold. Review the current audio-control labels in the game and confirm when the microphone is meant to transmit. If an older screenshot uses different wording, follow the labels in your current build.
A player can also be silenced through moderation. If the hardware and Microphone Activity tests look normal but nobody can hear one account, check whether an in-game moderation or silence state is active. Do not try to bypass an account restriction; use the official support route if you believe it was applied in error.
Ask one nearby friend to test with you after each change. Big Walk’s distance-aware communication makes a controlled close-range test more useful than shouting across the map. Once nearby speech works, move apart gradually to confirm that the normal proximity effect returns.
Fix Big Walk voice chat on PS5
On PlayStation 5, press the PS button and open Sound. The official Big Walk FAQ says to turn off Mute Game Voice Chat when game voice is unavailable. This console-level control can block the game even when Big Walk’s own microphone settings appear correct.
Also check the mute state on the DualSense controller or connected headset. Then return to Big Walk and watch Microphone Activity while speaking. Test next to another player, because proximity rules still apply after the console setting is corrected.
Do not confuse party chat behavior with Big Walk’s in-game proximity chat. The exact interaction can vary with the active PS5 voice setup, so use the official console control named above and retest inside the game. No additional party-routing steps are confirmed by the current official FAQ.
Why everyone may sound too quiet
The official FAQ lists voices being much too quiet in some situations as a known issue. It recommends checking operating-system microphone input volume and speaking close to the microphone while the developer works on a fix. PC Gamer also reported the developer acknowledgment, while multiple Reddit threads show players describing very quiet speech or platform-specific voice trouble.
This is not the same as normal proximity fading. Test while standing close together; if speech remains unusually faint, check system input volume without pushing it so high that it clips or adds heavy noise. Because a patch may change or remove this launch issue, compare the date at the top of this guide with the latest official FAQ.
One volume slider will not fix every case. Some players have input that is detected but not transmitted, while others can be heard only at a very low level. Match the check to the symptom, and treat the current volume advice as a temporary workaround rather than a permanent fix.
Check whether the problem is one player or the whole session
Have two players who can already hear each other stay nearby, then let the affected player join the test. If only one person cannot send audio, focus on that person’s microphone, mute mode, platform controls, and moderation status. If nobody in the session can communicate, recheck the host session, game versions, and official status information.
Restarting the affected game client is a safe follow-up after the official audio checks. If the entire group is affected, the host can restart the session after everyone confirms compatible versions. These are general session checks from the official connection guidance, not a guaranteed voice-specific repair.
Record the exact symptom rather than reporting only “voice chat broken.” Useful details include platform, input device, version, whether Microphone Activity moves, whether close-range speech works, and whether the PS5 voice setting is muted. That information helps distinguish an input bug, output setting, proximity behavior, and the known quiet-voice issue. It also gives support a clear reproduction path if the official checks do not help.
What not to do
Do not download unofficial audio drivers, delete system files, or install a third-party “game fixer” solely because a low-view video promises a universal repair. None of those steps is in the current official Big Walk guidance. Start with reversible game, hardware, and platform checks.
There is no official percentage boost, decibel target, or universal “best microphone sensitivity.” Different microphones behave differently, so compare results on the same platform, device, and game version. A setting that helps one headset is not evidence of a universal fix. Start with the official checks before changing system-wide audio settings.
Finally, do not treat another player being distant or behind terrain as proof of failure. Big Walk intentionally makes voice location-dependent, with effects such as fading, echoes, and muffling. Return to a close-range test before deciding that the microphone has stopped working.
Big Walk voice chat FAQ
Why does my microphone work in Discord but not Big Walk?
Check Microphone Activity inside Settings > Audio, the hardware mute state, and Mute Mode. Working in another app proves the device can capture audio, but it does not confirm the current in-game input state. Record the result and platform if the in-game meter still stays flat.
Why can I barely hear nearby players?
Unusually quiet voices were a known issue on the verification date. Check system microphone input volume, speak close to the microphone, and test while standing close together. Recheck the official FAQ for a newer patch status.
Why is Big Walk voice chat muted on PS5?
Open the PS button menu, choose Sound, and turn off Mute Game Voice Chat, as directed by the official FAQ. Also check the controller or headset mute state. Then retest inside Big Walk near another player.
Does Big Walk have text chat?
Yes. The official FAQ says text chat can be used for the entire game and follows the same distance and communication rules as voice. Read Can You Play Big Walk Without a Microphone? for the full explanation; use this page when a microphone should work but does not.
